A method performed by a network element (NE) comprises detecting a failure in the first preferred path route (PPR); receiving a data packet, wherein the data packet comprises a first PPR identifier (PPR-ID) indicating the first PPR in an Internet Protocol (IP) header of the data packet; in response to detecting the failure: adding a fast reroute routing header (FRRH) to the data packet; transferring the first PPR identifier (PPR-ID) from the IP header of the data packet to the FRRH; updating the IP header of the data packet to include a second PPR-ID; and forwarding the data packet with the FRRH on a reroute path according to the second PPR-ID.
