The present specification discloses an apparatus and method for detecting a rail defect improved compared to the prior art. According to the present specification, the apparatus comprises: an encoder moving along an inspection surface of a rail to be inspected and outputting data for a moving distance; a communication module transmitting/receiving data with an external device; a plurality of eddy current sensors; a frequency generator outputting an alternating signal to the eddy current sensors; and a processor electrically connected to the encoder, communication module, frequency generator, and eddy current sensors. The processor may control the frequency generator to output an alternating current having a predetermined frequency, and control a plurality of signals outputted by the eddy current sensors and data outputted from the encoder to be transmitted to the outside through the communication module.
