Provided are a personal authentication apparatus of a user using an electromyogram (EMG) measured when a facial expression of a head mounted display (HMD) wearer is changed and a method thereof. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the personal authentication apparatus of a user comprises: an input unit for acquiring a face EMG signal according to a change in a facial expression of a user; and a classification unit classifying the expression and the user by using a classifier previously learned according to the expression in the acquired face EMG signal. As a user classified through the classifier is recognized, personal authentication of the user may be performed.
