The present invention relates to a method of operating an inkjet printer to form text data with non-absorbent media ink on non-absorbent media, the method which forms characters having a structure that improves the integrity of the character edges compared to previously known systems. The method includes a step of modifying character pixels in image data used to generate emission signals for operating an inkjet in a printhead of an inkjet imaging device, a step of generating emission signals for operating the inkjet from the modified character pixels, and a step of operating the inkjet in the printhead with the generated emission signals to eject non-absorbent media ink drops onto the non-absorbent media to form characters on the non-absorbent media. The character pixel modification reduces the number of character pixels in connected regions of the character having values corresponding to the emission signals that activate the inkjet.
