The present invention relates to a method for detecting a leakage during the operation of a braking system. According to the present invention, the method comprises the steps of: generating a braking intention signal characterizing a braking intention by actuating an actuator assembly of an actuating circuit; determining a target braking pressure required in an active circuit according to the braking intention signal; setting an actual braking pressure in the active circuit according to the target braking pressure with the aid of a pressure generation unit by moving a displacement piston to actuate a wheel brake coupled to the active circuit; and performing a pressure modulation. The pressure modulation performing step includes the steps of: setting the actual braking pressure in the active circuit to a value greater than the target braking pressure; and lowering the actual braking pressure until the target braking pressure is reached by moving the displacement piston at a predetermined piston speed. Furthermore, the method includes the steps of: determining a pressure gradient over time as the actual braking pressure is being lowered during pressure modulation; and detecting a leakage from the active circuit according to the determined pressure gradient when the pressure gradient is outside a range predetermined for the piston speed.
