The present invention relates to an iron-based alloy capable of providing a coating on a substrate, wherein the coating simultaneously has high hardness and wear resistance. Ferrous alloys comprise 3.0-7.0 wt.% Cr; 1.3-3.0 weight percent C; 0.2-2.0 wt.% B; 2.0-10.0 wt.% V; Optionally 1.5% by weight or less of Si; Optionally up to 1.0% Mn, optionally up to 2.0% Mo; Optionally no greater than 1.5 weight percent Ni; The rest consists of Fe and unavoidable impurities. The invention also relates to an article comprising a substrate and a coating formed thereon, and a method of forming a coated article, wherein the coating is formed from an alloy. This method preferably uses HVOF, laser cladding or plasma cladding.
