The present invention relates to a process for the catalytic reaction of diethanolamine with maleic acid followed by 2-halocarboxylic acid to produce a mixture of chelating agents, a mixture obtainable using the process, and a mixture of chelating agents. The invention also relates to methods in which said mixtures are used.
