Increased instrument life available in remote surgical systems

The telesurgical system operates in a first mode of operation and a second mode of operation. In the first mode of operation, the movable component is driven within a first range of operating parameters. In the second mode of operation, the movable component is driven with a second range of operating parameters smaller than the first range. The usable instrument life is increased by reducing the mechanical degradation of the movable component as a result of operating in the second range. The surgeon can select either mode of operation.
