Disclosed is a method for applying extra charge by region on taxi fares using a taxi fare payment device for determining whether a taxi enters an extra charge area and whether a taxi leaves an extra charge area based on GPS information. The method comprises: a step that a taxi meter applies a rate applied with regional extra charge rate when the taxi receives a signal indicating that the tax enters an extra charge area from a taxi fare payment device; and a step that the tax meter determines taxi fare and transmit the taxi fare to the taxi fare payment device when the taxi meter receives an operation terminal signal from a user interface.
