The present invention relates to: an imidazole-based compound represented by chemical formula 1 and having excited-state intermolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) characteristics; and a manufacturing method thereof. In the chemical formula 1, X is halogen, and R1 and R2 are each independently substituted aryl. The imidazole-based compound according to the present invention can be usefully used in organic electroluminescent devices, chemical sensors, solar energy concentrators, ultraviolet stabilizers, and the like.
