Disclosed is a method of calculating a capacity of an energy storage device, capable of optimizing a capacity of an onboard energy storage device including an energy storage medium and a converter according to a cooling method of a propulsion inverter system. A method of calculating a capacity of an onboard energy storage device considering a propulsion inverter system using a natural cooling method, comprises the following steps of: deriving a train electrical load characteristic curve of a wiring method; calculating a power change curve according to operation of a wired railway vehicle on a route; calculating a capacity of an initial energy storage medium and converter and updating mass added according to the calculated capacity; allowing the energy storage medium and the converter to derive a train electrical load characteristic curve of a railway vehicle using a rapid charging method of a station installed in a railway vehicle; storing, as E_opt (k), a value with the largest energy value required according to a movement between stations when the operation on the route is completed, and storing, as P_PCS (k), the largest power size value among propulsion power during a movement, regenerative power, and station charging power; and calculating, to an optimal capacity value, an energy storage medium capacity value and a converter capacity value derived by performing repeated operation until obtaining a value within a reference value to ignore a change according to additional repeated operation compared to prior values. A calculation of a capacity of an onboard energy storage device considering a propulsion inverter system using a forced air cooling method is performed by additionally reflecting a cooling fan for cooling a propulsion control inverter at regular electrical load to a step of calculating a capacity of an onboard energy storage device considering a propulsion inverter system using a natural cooling method. Therefore, the capacity of the onboard energy storage device is optimized according to a cooling method of a propulsion inverter system, thereby minimizing increase of added weight.
