Disclosed are a carbon substrate for a gas diffusion layer of a fuel cell, comprising a plate-shape substrate having an upper surface and a lower surface on an opposite side thereof, wherein the plate-shaped substrate comprises carbon fibers arranged to be extended in a unidirectional orientation, and organic polymeric carbide binding the carbon fibers between the carbon fibers; a gas diffusion layer comprising the same; a gas diffusion layer employing the same; an electrode for a fuel cell; a membrane electrode assembly for a fuel cell; and a fuel cell. The carbon substrate comprises carbon fibers oriented in any one direction selected from a longitudinal direction (MD) and a transverse direction (CMD) by controlling the orientation of the carbon fibers, and thus has an excellent mechanical strength, in particular, an excellent bending strength even if the carbon substrate is thin and accordingly, a phenomenon of the gas diffusion layer permeating into a metallic separation plate passage can be effectively prevented, and the gas flow characteristics become more excellent. Accordingly, the intrusion of the gas diffusion layer can be prevented.
