The present disclosure provides an optical component, the optical component comprising: (a) a substrate; And (b) a sub-wavelength interval generating a diffracted light beam having a separate polarization state for each of the diffraction orders of a finite number ―the finite number is 2 or more ― when tessellated on the substrate and illuminated with polarized incident light. It may be a metasurface grating comprising an array of phase shifting elements.
