Sets of equivalent syntax patterns are learned from the corpus of documents. One or more sets of input documents are received. One or more sets of input documents are processed for one or more representations that match one set of equivalent syntax patterns among the set of equivalent syntax patterns. Among the equivalent syntax patterns, a syntax pattern for the headline is selected. The syntax pattern reflects the main event described by the set of one or more input documents. Headlines are generated using syntax patterns.
