Methods of inactivating the virus in a sample comprising a protein component are provided. Also provided are methods of reducing proteolysis or modification in the presence of reactive species, such as reactive species resulting from UV exposure. In another aspect, methods of reducing oxidation of methionine residues, tryptophan residues or both methionine and tryptophan residues in a protein that receives UV light are provided. The disclosed methods can be performed at any scale and can be automated as needed.
