The present invention provides catalytic methods and corresponding catalysts for the transalkylation of 1-ring (C 9+ ) aromatics, such as transalkylation, to form para-xylene and/or other xylenes. Suitable catalysts include molecular sieves having a 3-D 12-membered ring skeleton structure, molecular sieves having a 1-D 12-membered ring skeleton structure, acidic microporous materials having a pore channel size of at least 6.0 Angstroms, and/or MWW framework structures. Contains molecular sieve. The method includes performing transalkylation wherein at least a portion of the feed to the transalkylation process is a liquid phase. Optionally, the transalkylation conditions can correspond to conditions in which a continuous liquid phase is present in the reaction environment. Some embodiments include a liquid phase transalkylation process for a naphthalene containing feedstock stream.
