The present invention relates to a steel Yankee cylinder 1 comprising a cylindrical shell 2 having two axial ends 3 and 4. The end walls 5, 6 are connected to each axial end 3, 4 by means of cylindrical welding beads 7. The cylindrical shell has an inner surface 8 on which circumferential grooves 9a, 9b, 9c, 9d, 9e are formed. From the outermost circumferential groove (9a) of each axial end (3, 4) to the circumferential weld bead (7) of the corresponding axial end (3, 4), the wall thickness (T) of the cylindrical shell is constant or reduced. And, the depth d1 of the circumferential groove increases in the axial direction from the outermost circumferential groove 9a.
