FIELD: chemistry.;SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing chloromethylated polystyrene which can be used in organic synthesis when producing ion-exchange resins and selective membranes. Method of producing chloromethylated polystyrene involves first reacting linear polystyrene with formals in thionyl chloride in the presence of a catalyst – tin tetrachloride for 0.1–0.75 hours at 0–10 °C. Reaction mass is then washed with carbon tetrachloride and subsequent hot extraction with anhydrous alcohol. 1,3-dioxolane is used as a formal.
