FIELD: ecology.;SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of ecology, applied hydrobiology and environmental protection and is intended for assessment of ecological condition of coastal marine water areas. Method of assessing self-cleaning potential of coastal water area includes obtaining parameters of water area and assessment of water body for self-purification, wherein to obtain the required parameters, macrophytobenthos samples are taken, species composition, species reserves are determined, nitrogen (N) or phosphorus (P) daily intake in sea with effluents and from the re-sources is calculated, and potential values of daily nitrogen or phosphorus removal by macrophytobenthos are calculated. Evaluation of self-purification is carried out by calculating self-purification index, which is ratio of input nitrogen or phosphorus input into water area (kg/day) to withdrawal of nitrogen or phosphorus by macrophytobenthos (kg/day). Index value equal to one reflects critical level of complete self-purification of water area by macrophytobenthos. If the value of the index is more than one, macrophytobenthos is unable to completely cope with the nutrient load and the deterioration of the biocoenosis state is predicted, and the value of the index less than one reflects the improvement of the biocoenosis.;EFFECT: invention makes it possible to determine the possibility of the coastal ecosystem to transfer existing and to take additional loads on inorganic forms of nitrogen and phosphorus, as well as to characterize the ecological state of coastal water areas and calculate their potential capacity by nitrogen and phosphorus.;1 cl, 3 tbl, 1 ex
