A method of making a layered, one-piece fiber reinforcement (10) for a reinforced polymeric article, the method comprising: at least one fiber layer (54) having a surface that has aligned fibers in side-by-side contact with a coextensive layer of random Comprising fiber (52) comprising randomly oriented fibers; characterized in that a preselected number of aligned fibers (53 ') are conveyed from the aligned fiber layer (54) to the random fiber layer (52) such that the preselected number of fibers form loops (53') which form out of the plane of the reinforcement, the loops (53 ') being inserted into the random layer (52) to engage and interfere with at least some of the random fibers of the random layer (52) to provide the layer with aligned Securely bonding fiber (54) to the random fiber layer (52); the loops (53 ') being generally evenly distributed over the surface of the oriented fiber layer (54); the reinforcement (10) further comprising a second layer (50) with aligned fiber generally co-extensive with the first layer (54) with aligned fiber, the layer (52) with random fiber between and in contacting side- in side-by-side relationship with the first and second aligned fiber layers (50, 54) and in which a preselected number of aligned fibers from the first aligned fiber layer (54) is out of the plane of the first aligned fiber layer (54) Fiber is conveyed out and inserted through the random fiber layer (52) and at least into the second layer (50) with aligned fiber, and in which the aligned fibers from the first layer (54) with aligned fiber to the second layer ( 50) are conveyed with aligned fiber by: inserting a tool (56) in one location in the first aligned fiber layer (54), the tool (56) having at least one disposable fiber capture feature (58) that is oriented to engage at least one fiber at one point when withdrawn; thereafter advancing the tool (56) until at least the fiber capture feature (58) penetrates the second layer (50) of aligned fiber; thereafter reversing the direction of movement of the tool (56) to retract the tool (56) from the second layer (50) with aligned fiber so that the disposable fiber capture feature (58) includes at least one aligned fiber from the second layer (50) aligned fiber; the tool (56) is further retracted until it exits the first aligned fiber layer (54), thereby feeding the captured aligned fiber from the second aligned fiber layer (50) into the first aligned fiber layer pulling to insert the captured aligned fiber into the first aligned fiber layer (54); and relocating the tool (56) to another location and repeating the above steps until the predetermined number of fibers have been conveyed from the second aligned fiber layer (50) and inserted into the first aligned fiber layer (54).
