Method for operating a photovoltaic system (1) with an inverter (2), with a photovoltaic generator (3) connected to an input (7) of the inverter (2), the inverter (2) having an operating voltage (U) of the photovoltaic generator (3) specifies at the input (7) and is set up for tracking an operating voltage (U) of maximum power from the photovoltaic generator (3), with an energy store (4) for electrical energy and with a bidirectional converter (5) via which the energy store (4 ) is connected in parallel to the photovoltaic generator (3) to the input (7) of the inverter (2), - whereby the converter (5) detects a time profile of the power (P) output by the photovoltaic generator (3) and - wherein the converter (5) is operated in a tracking mode (27) such that it enables the operating voltage (U) of maximum power to be tracked by the inverter (2), characterized in that - the converter r (5) is operated in a compensation mode (26) in such a way that it compensates for fluctuations in the power (P) of the photovoltaic generator (3) compared to a desired power (P) flowing into the inverter (2) via the input (7) by adjusts the power (P) that it delivers to the input (7) or branches off from there so that the sum of the power (P) of the converter (5) and the power (P) of the photovoltaic generator (3) is equal to the target power (P ), and - that in an ongoing operation of the photovoltaic system (1), in which power (P) from the photovoltaic generator (3) is available, there is a repeated change between the compensation mode (26) and the tracking mode (27).
