A method of mass spectrometry, comprising: subjecting first ions having a state of charge m to an electron detachment, electron capture or electron transfer process to form second ions having a state of charge n, where m # n; andcausing at least some of the second ions to interact with analyte ions having a polarity opposite to that of the second ions to cause at least some of the analyte ions to fragment by electron transfer dissociation ("ETD") to form fragment ions.
