Techniques are provided to enable the use of a blockchain system that integrates the trustworthiness of the blockchain concept with open scientific research by creating a blockchain from the experiments, data collected, analyzes performed and results achieved. In one example, the blockchain system can generate a blockchain that represents a research project, the blockchain having a first block of research data and a second block of analysis data that represent a protocol of an analysis that was performed based on the research data. Summary blocks and correction blocks, which represent the post-analysis of the research results, can also be added to the blockchain. One or more subsequent blocks can be linked to the previous blocks using information in block headers, which can also be used to determine whether changes have been made to the blocks.
