The invention relates to a plant for the production of methane from organic substances such as sewage sludge, biomass or plastics by hydrogenation and methanation with simultaneous generation of the hydrogen required for this by electrolysis. Electrolysis is carried out by fuel cells at the same or comparable pressure and temperature conditions. The plant is used to generate methane as a basic chemical or energy source, LNG and inorganic nutrients. It is suitable for the intermittent absorption of excess electrical energy in the sense of sector coupling electricity generation - energy source - chemical raw material production.
