The invention relates to a silica airgel with an exceptional combination of thermal, mechanical and optical properties. The silica airgel according to the invention is highly transparent with a high color rendering index and has a low thermal conductivity, the increase in thermal conductivity depending on the gas pressure being very small. The silica airgel according to the invention is also characterized by high mechanical stability and shows little compression when subjected to external pressure.
