A modular, mobile, compact, multi-stage and highly efficient biogas plant (100), a method for operating a modular biogas plant (100) and a system for computer-aided, decentralized monitoring and control of at least one modular biogas plant (100) are disclosed. The system can be equipped with modular, local intelligence and a local control unit. The modular biogas plant (100) is provided with a large number of tanks (10) for holding biomass (3). The tanks (10) can be fluidly connected to one another. At least one gas store (20) is also provided for the biogas generated in the modular biogas plant (100). Each of the tanks (10) is a module (1) of the biogas plant (100). Each tank can be positioned in a rigid and cuboid frame (12), the cuboid frame (12) having six side surfaces (14). The side surfaces (14) of the cuboid frame (12) define an envelope for the tank (10).
