The present invention relates to a charging device for charging a battery 7 of a motor vehicle designed with an electric drive motor 2, with an inductor, and a drive converter 3, which converts the DC voltage of the battery 7 for the electric drive motor 2 when the motor vehicle is being driven, the inductance together serves as a step-up converter with the drive converter 3 for charging the battery 7. With the aim of providing an improved and in particular more adaptable charging device, a switching unit 10 is provided in the charging device which is designed to connect a charge source 8, 12 to the battery 7 directly or via the step-up converter.
