An automatic procedure is used for the thermogravimetric analysis of several samples from coal or coke to determine volatile components. This method uses a thermogravimetric analyzer that includes an auto load transport system, an oven, a moveable platform within the oven, an external scale, and an internal scale to measure the weight of the sample holders, lids and samples before and after treatment in the oven. The coal or coke samples are filled into the sample holder and weighed on the external balance. They are automatically introduced into the oven heated to 950 ° C. All sample holders are weighed sequentially on the internal scale exactly 7 minutes after insertion, with a buffer time of 14 to 20 seconds between successive weighing processes. The weights determined after the treatment in the furnace and before being introduced into the furnace are compared and the amount of volatile substances is determined in this way.
