A process for producing agglomerates of ultrafine coal particles comprising mixing a film-forming agglomeration aid (FFAA) with an amount of ultrafine coal particles to produce ultrafine coal particles coated with the FFAA. The FFAA has a lower surface energy relative to the surface of the ultrafine coal particles. The FFAA is mixed with the ultrafine coal particles in an amount of less than 3% by weight of the ultrafine coal particles on a dry basis. Agglomerates of ultrafine coal particles coated with the film-forming agglomeration aid are formed using shaking, pelleting and / or briquetting. The agglomerates have a size of at least 2 mm. The ultrafine coal particles have a size of less than 100 µm. The agglomerates have a friability in the centrifugal test of less than 3%. The friability in the drop test is also less than 3%.
