Micro-optical device comprising: a substrate; a plurality of picture elements in one picture plane; and a plurality of focusing elements, each focusing element focusing light on a focal point on the image plane and enlarging each portion of a picture element falling within the focal point, thereby producing an image pixel that is projected to a user at one or more viewing angles, wherein the focus point has a smaller extent than the picture element, each picture element including a picture sub-element having a different perceptible brightness level to a different location of the picture element, the brightness of each projected image pixel depending on the proportion of the focus point filled with the picture sub-element, and wherein each image sub-element has one or more attributes in the image plane, so that from a given point of view the brightness of each projected image pixel depends on each attribute of each image sub-element.
