The sound absorbing material according to the present invention is formed by laminating a porous sound absorber and two or more layers of a nonwoven fabric on top of each other. The nonwoven fabric has a plurality of drawn filaments which are arranged and oriented in one direction. The modal value of the diameter distribution of the plurality of filaments is in the range from 1 to 4 µm. The basis weight of the nonwoven is in the range of 5 to 40 g / m. The sound absorbing material according to the present invention provides high sound absorption performance in a given low frequency band of 6,000 Hz or less, and yet remains light and flexible enough and easy enough to handle to be substantially comparable to the porous sound absorber.
