In order to ascertain at least one actual value of a controlled variable of a reactant of a fuel cell for regulation with as small a measurement error as possible, there is provision for a model (I) of the conditioning unit (3) to be used to calculate a model value of the controlled variable (II), a sensor model (III) for the measurement sensor (Sn) to be used to calculate a model value of the actual value of the controlled variable (IV), the actual value of the controlled variable (RGnist), measured using the measurement sensor (Sn), and the model value of the actual value of the controlled variable (IV), calculated using the sensor model (III), to be used to calculate a correction value (RGcorr) for the controlled variable (RGn), and the actual value of the at least one controlled variable (V) to be calculated as the sum of the correction value (RGcorr) and the model value of the controlled variable (II), calculated using the model (I) of the conditioning unit (3), wherein this actual value of the controlled variable (II) is also used in the sensor model (III) to calculate the model value of the actual value of the controlled variable (IV).
