The invention relates to a synthesis gas generator (S) with a reactor (P) and a method for warming up and keeping warm the pressurized reaction space (A) of the reactor (P), to which a hydrocarbon-containing feed gas (1) via a process burner (B ) is supplied in order to be converted into a synthesis gas (4) in the reaction space (A) by partial oxidation at a reaction pressure above atmospheric pressure. The characteristic feature here is that the hydrocarbon-containing feed gas (5) is subjected to a catalytic autothermal reforming (K) at a pressure which essentially corresponds to the pressure in the reaction chamber (A) in order to add a reformed gas mixture (8) to form a heating gas (9) obtained, which is fed to the reaction space (A) at a temperature above the current reaction space temperature.
