Process for the recovery of a valuable material from municipal waste, in which (a) municipal waste (S), which contains a plastic fraction with plastic articles and further waste fractions, by means of a sorting system which comprises a roller screen (9) with rotating screw rollers (18), according to fractions of different grain sizes is sorted, (b) the municipal waste (S) or a sub-fraction (F7) of the municipal waste (S), which contains at least part of the plastic articles and other waste fractions, is fed to the roller screen (9), (c) an undersize fraction (F9) falls through the roller screen (9) and an oversized grain fraction (K9, L9), which contains plastic articles of the plastic fraction, is conveyed on the roller screen (9) to a discharge area of the roller screen (9) and carried away at the discharge area, (d) and plastic articles from the Oversize fraction (K9, L9) removed from the roller screen (9) are subjected to a comminution process.
