The lifting unit (313) for lifting a print head (103) of a printing device (100) is moved in a cyclical movement synchronously with incoming recording media (120) within the idle path (404) of the lifting unit (313), so that the lifting unit (313) moves when a defective recording medium (120) is detected, it is already in a direction of movement required to lift the print head (103). When a defective recording medium (120) is detected, the print head (103) can be lifted quickly and reliably by the lifting unit (313) in order to protect the print head (103) from contact with the defective recording medium (120).
