Mobile energy supply system with a multiplicity of battery modules which can be controllably connected in series in order to provide different voltages at an output of the energy supply system, a control unit for controlling the battery modules, each battery module having: an input and an output connection, a battery unit, and a bridge circuit which is provided between the input connection and the output connection and is designed to either connect the battery unit to the input and output connection -battery mode-, or to connect the input connection to the output connection while bridging the battery unit -bridging mode-, characterized in that each battery module is designed, to be controlled in an operating mode and a sleep mode, wherein in the operating mode the bridge circuit can be switched to the battery mode and the bridging mode and in the sleep mode the bridge circuit is in a state with minimal em energy consumption is set.
