An electronic system includes a pixelated light source having a plurality of individually controllable pixels, a controller configured to control the pixelated light source, a photosensor configured to detect light signals emitted by the pixelated light source, and an analysis unit that is configured to recognize objects with different properties that occur within the range of the pixelated light source and the photosensor on the basis of the light signals detected by the photosensor. Appropriate methods for object detection and material analysis are also described.
