An object of at least one embodiment of the present invention is to provide an apparatus for processing magnetic recording media which is capable of preventing illegal detection of magnetic information on the medium transport path. In an apparatus for processing magnetic recording media 1, an interference magnetic field generator 40 generates an interference magnetic field along a medium transport path 22. Furthermore, an interference magnetic field control device causes an interference magnetic field generator 40, starting with the insertion of a magnetic recording medium 2 into an insertion slot 11 until the start of the detection of a magnetic signal by a first magnetic head to generate a first spurious magnetic field in a first frequency range containing a specific frequency used for reproducing magnetic information and in a second frequency range not containing the specific frequency and causing the spurious magnetic field generator 40 during a period in which the magnetic signal passes through the first magnetic head 21 is detected to generate a second interference magnetic field in a frequency range that does not contain the specific frequency.
