The approach presented here creates a swiping gesture recognition device (160) for determining a swiping gesture exerted on a movable surface element (140) of a vehicle component. The swiping gesture recognition device (160) comprises a spring (250) which exerts a preload between the movable surface element (140) and a housing element (245) of the vehicle component (130). Furthermore, the swiping gesture recognition device (160) comprises a contactless measuring distance sensor (224) with at least three sensor elements (222) arranged at different positions for detecting a distance (d) between the surface element (140) and the housing element (245) at the positions of the sensor elements (222). Finally, the swiping gesture recognition device (160) comprises an evaluation unit (215) which is designed to measure the swiping gesture exerted on the surface element (140) using a parameter of the spring (250) and the distances (d) detected by the sensor elements (222) to determine the surface element (140) and the housing element (245).
