In general, the present invention relates to a layered optical composite material, in particular for use in an augmented reality device. More particularly, the invention relates to a layered optical composite and a process for its preparation, a device comprising the layered optical composite and a process for its preparation, and the use of a layered optical composite in an augmented reality device. The present invention relates to a layered optical composite comprising: i.) a substrate having a front surface, a back surface, a thickness d between the front surface and the rear surface and a refractive index n, ii.) a coating applied to the front surface, wherein the coating comprises a group A of coating layers which have a refractive index of 1.7 or more and a group B of coating layers which have a refractive index of less than 1.7; the sum of the thicknesses of the layers of group A is a maximum of 55% of the total thickness of the coating.
