In one aspect, a system for determining an initial angular position of a rotor of a synchronous machine includes a motor drive module configured to provide a motor drive voltage signal to the synchronous machine, the motor drive voltage signal sufficient to induce an electrical current into the synchronous machine; and a rotor positioning module configured to receive an indication of the current generated in the machine and to determine the initial position of the rotor based on the indication of the current generated in the machine. The motor drive voltage signal includes at least a first section, a second section, and a third section, the first section having a first non-zero voltage for a first time duration, the second section having a second non-zero voltage for a second time duration, and the third section has a voltage of substantially zero during a third temporal duration, the first portion having a first polarity and the second portion having a second polarity opposite to the first polarity and the first temporal duration and the second temporal duration being different.
