PHOTONIC DEVICE WITH PRELOAD CONTROL TO PROVIDE THE ESSENTIAL CONSTANTER RESPONSE SENSITIVITY OF A PHOTODETECTOR

Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to techniques and configurations for a photonic device having a photodetector with bias control to provide substantially constant responsiveness. The apparatus includes: a first photodetector for receiving an optical input and providing a corresponding electrical output; a second photodetector coupled to the first photodetector, the second photodetector receiving no optical input; and circuitry coupled to the first and second photodetectors for: generating a bias based at least in part on a dark current generated by the second photodetector in the absence of the optical input; and providing the generated bias to the first photodetector. The first photodetector is intended to provide a substantially constant ratio of the electrical output to the optical input in response to providing the generated bias.
