This method of determining a state noise covariance matrix for the adjustment of an observer of the state of charge of an electric storage battery comprises the steps of: -determination, for each operating point d 'a set of battery operating points, with a value of at least one component (Ro, Zi) of an electric model of the battery; obtaining, for each of said values, an error (r (SOCk)) in determining said component; storage of the values of said component and of determination errors; - calculation of the standard deviation (σ [r (SOC1 ... p)]) of the determination errors for different battery operating points; and -development of the covariance matrix (Q) from the calculated standard deviation.
