The invention relates to a method for determining a difference in depth, or a lateral deviation from the vertical between two points (O2, M) of an underwater medium (E), in particular by measuring a time propagation of an acoustic wave. This determination is based on a monolayer model of the medium in which the wave is supposed to propagate in a straight line in an effective direction of propagation, with an average speed independent of this direction of propagation. The invention also relates to a method for determining the profile of said average speed, based on the depth difference measurements themselves, a determination of the profile of local speed over the variation interval of the depths probed, and a sonar system.
