The invention relates to a method for determining a respective atomic faction of chemical elements each representing at least 10%, or even at least 6%, of the composition of an object to be identified (40). The method being implemented by means of a measurement system (10) based on the associated particle technique and a processing unit (20) comprising a neural network (25). The method comprising: providing a plurality of learning gamma spectra; implementation by the processing unit (20) of a procedure for training the neural network (25) from the plurality of training gamma spectra to determine the relationship between the training gamma spectra and the composition of corresponding samples; carrying out a measurement with the technique of the associated particle of the object to be identified and; determination, by means of the determined relationship, of a composition of the object to be identified from the result of the measurement.
