The workbench system 100 includes a workbench 102 and a sensor system comprising one or more sensors 120, 126. The sensor system is configured to identify a user 122 in a workspace in which the workbench is located. A controller 106 operatively coupled to the sensor system is configured to: based on the identity of the user, determine a task to be performed by the user using the workbench system; and based on the identity of the user and the determined task, control one or more properties of the work bench. The properties may be a physical property (e.g. height) of the workbench, transmission of data from the workbench to a remote entity, or reception of data by the workbench from a remote entity. The controller may be configured to control a multi-axis robot 104 based on the identity of the user. The sensor may be a camera to capture images of the user.
