A dewatering unit suitable for filtering waste water from slurries or suspensions, comprising; i) a container defining an internal volume; ii) a partition dividing the internal volume into a first compartment and a second compartment, wherein the first compartment includes an opening for introducing a slurry to be filtered; the partition, allows slurry to pass from the first compartment to the second compartment while retaining solids above a predetermined size in the first compartment; the second compartment comprises a drainage opening for allowing liquid to flow from the container. The container further defines a housing for a filter, such that when a filter is disposed in the housing, slurry flowing through the first and second compartments flows through the filter before reaching the drainage opening. The second compartment may define the housing for the filter, such that slurry flowing through the partition into the second container flows though a filter before reaching the drainage opening. The first compartment may be open-topped. The filter may comprise at least one porous bag or cartridge holding filter members in the form of a geosynthetic aggregate. A second aspect is directed towards a method of operating the dewatering unit of the first aspect.
