A method comprising introducing a foam to a substrate comprising a plurality of channels through the open ends of channels at a first substrate end where the foam is particle stabilized. Optionally applying a vacuum to open channel ends at a second substrate end or pressure at the first substrate end of the channels. The foam may then be dried and/or calcined. The foam layer may comprise an open cell structure. Also included are claims for an emission control device comprising a solid foam layer disposed on a substrate as formed by the method of the earlier claims. The foam may be largely localised on the walls of the channels. The particles used in stabilizing the foam may be ceramic, catalytic or sorbent, when catalytic they may be an active metal on a support, the metal may comprise a transition metal and the support may be a refractory oxide, metal aluminate or a zeolite. The particulate material may be a capture material for volatilised platinum comprising particles of a refractory oxide and/or a platinum-alloying metal.
