A method for controlling the sub-pixels in liquid crystal display (LCD) screens in three dimensional (3D) printing is described. The method includes an algorithm that enables a three dimensional object to be mapped onto a three-dimensional space associated with a 3D printer with an LCD screen used to display a cross-sectional two dimensional (2D) slice of an object. The algorithm generates new data points and creates new addressable elements and assigns colour or high intensity hex values to the sub-pixels that are fully contained within the desired object and black or low intensity hex values to sub-pixels that are outside the 3D object. In doing so it generates one or more graphic files based on the low and high adjusted hex values. Also disclosed is a stereolithographic printer which is controlled according to the method.
