A control system 1 for controlling movement, e.g. parking, of a trailer 200 independently of a towing vehicle 100 using an actuation system 203 which includes a pair of motors 203a, 203b. The control system 1 comprises a first control module 10 in the vehicle 100 and a second control module 20 in the trailer 200. The control module 10 is configured to generate a 2-dimensional map or 3-dimensional model of a region surrounding the trailer 200, to establish a user-specified target position (B, fig 3c) for the trailer 200, to calculate a route (301) between an initial position (A) of the trailer 200 and the target position (B), and to control the trailer 200 to move along the calculated route (301) towards the target position (B). The user-specified position may be set, for example by a user operating a control element to highlight the position for the trailer with respect to the map/model.
